The Teresa Herrera Trophy is one of the oldest and most prestigious friendly football tournaments in the world, held annually in the city of A Coruña and bringing together some of the most important clubs in international football since its first edition in 1946. After several years in which the trophy was organized by the Coruña City Council, in 2000 the Deportivo de La Coruña took over the organization. The tournament, with the aim of raising funds for the city's hospitals in a time of hardship, bears the name of Teresa Herrera, a prominent philanthropist from the 18th century (1712–1791), famous in the city for dedicating her life and her fortune to helping the sick and the most disadvantaged. The first edition of the tournament was held in 1946 and featured the participation of Sevilla and Athletic Club de Bilbao. Over the years, the tournament began to receive visits from foreign clubs, increasing its prestige and making it a major event. In the 50s and 60s, teams like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Múnich and Benfica began to compete in the Teresa Herrera, consolidating its reputation as a high-level tournament. The format of the Teresa Herrera Trophy has varied over the years. Initially, it was played as a quadrangular tournament with four teams, with semifinals and a final. Two editions have also been played with a triangular format, in 2003 and 2005, and over the decades, these formats have alternated with the single match format.
